VITAE
Dr. Michael Easterbrook
is a Professor of Ophthalmology
at the University of
Toronto.
He is presently on active
staff at the Toronto
Western Hospital, St.
Michael’s Hospital,
Princess Margaret Hospital,
and the Mt. Sinai Hospital,
and is a consultant
to Sunnybrook &
Women’s College
Hospital and the Orthopedic
and Arthritic Hospital.
Dr.
Easterbrook was born
in Brandon Manitoba
and was raised in the
Kingsway in Toronto.
He put his way through
the University of Toronto
medical school, by working
at a whaling station
at Cold Harbor, at the
top of Vancouver Island,
in British Columbia.
After completing medical
school, where he was
president of the Graduating
class of 1965, he did
a year of residency
in Neurology at the
Montreal General, followed
by 3 years of Ophthalmology
in Toronto. A fellowship
in uveitis and external
disease followed at
the Proctor Institute
at the University of
California in San Francisco.
Michael
teaches ophthalmology
residents 4 half days
per week at the University
of Toronto’s associated
hospitals in downtown
Toronto.
For
25 years, Dr. Easterbrook
was the Eye Surgeon
for the Toronto Maple
Leafs hockey team. From
1995-2010 Dr. Easterbrook
was the consulting eye
surgeon for the Toronto
Raptors basketball team.
At present he is the
consulting surgeon for
the University of Toronto
varsity teams and the
Toronto F. C. Soccer
Team.
Over
many years, he has consulted
with rheumatologists
and has seen many patients
with specific reference
to anti-malarial drugs,
which have become a
focus and an interest.
With
Dr. Tom Pashby as a
mentor, Dr. Easterbrook
has been active in preventing
eye injuries in sport,
at both the amateur
and professional levels.
He is the Medical Consultant
to the World Squash
Association, Squash
Canada, and Squash Ontario,
and has consulted for
the Canadian Badminton
Association, the American
Amateur Racquetball
Association and the
Canadian Standards Association.
He has been active in
writing standards for
prevention of eye injuries
in sports and lectures
both nationally and
internationally on his
interests.
